For 7/29/10: For Today: Today is expected to be the peak in the potential for rain and thundershowers as this moisture rotates through the area from the southwest. Regional radar is showing a few slow moving cells early lifting through to the north. These will eventually find our area and we should expect slow moving and wetting systems by the afternoon.

Temperatures: Lows stayed warm again with the blanket of cloud cover with Crested Butte reporting 54 degrees and Gunnison holding to 58 degrees. Highs will be moderated by the cloud cover but look for gaps of sunshine to still push the northend of the valley to 71 degrees and 80 for Gunnison. Tonight will feel a lot like last night with lows holding in the mid 50’s.

Outlook: The subtropical plume of monsoonal moisture is continuing to lift directly up into the west and this will fuel at least convective thundershowers through the weekend. The influx of drier western air through the end of the week will mean longer windows of sunshine but expect active afternoons and plan accordingly.

For 7/28/10: For Today: The moisture lifting around the southern ridge to our west is starting the slow march through our area and the slower wetting rains that we saw yesterday will also be a threat for today. The cloud cover we are seeing early isn’t holding much moisture but once temperatures start to rise expect them to form slow moving and potentially stronger cells which will intensify into the afternoon.

Temperatures: Heavy cloud cover overnight kept the low temperatures in check with Crested Butte reporting 51 degrees and Gunnison holding to 52. Highs will stay cool under the heavy cloud cover but still reach 72 degrees for Crested Butte and 81 for Gunnison. Look for another moderate overnight low with temperatures holding to the low 50’s.

Outlook: While the ridge holds over Texas it will push moisture up into the west. Winds are set to remain light which means slower moving and wetting systems with flash flood warnings being issued around our area. Stay smart about your plans and be prepared.

For 7/27/10: For Today: This ridge to the south has caused moisture to gather in stronger slow moving pockets across the west and regional radar is showing a strong cell moving up the I-70 corridor early. This will stay to our north but will provide the necessary moisture to fuel thundershowers building on the higher terrain with the heat of the day. These will be slow moving cells and will likely produce wetting rains.

Temperatures: Contrary to the forecast we warmed up overnight with Crested Butte reporting 54 degrees and 55 degrees for Gunnison. Highs today will warm but be moderated by the cloud cover building early with the north end of the valley hitting 74 degrees and Gunnison climbing to 81. Look for another warm night with the cloud cover and slow storms.

Outlook: Plenty of moisture is finding it’s way around the southern high pressure and precipitable water levels are rising steadily. The trend towards bigger slow moving storms will continue through Thursday. Expect the mix of sun and thundershowers but the consequences could be higher with these stronger cells so be prepared.

For 7/26/10: For Today: The ridge to our south has pushed the monsoonal plume off to the south and west with only residual moisture available for any convective activity. Today will be the driest day of the week with mostly sunny conditions set to dominate and only very widely scattered thundershowers possible on the highest terrain.

Temperatures: Lows were colder than we have been seeing last night with the drier air with Crested Butte reporting 41 degrees and Gunnison dropping to 44 degrees. Daytime highs will rebound under these sunny skies with the north end of the valley expected to hit 74 degrees while Gunnison just tops 80. Look for another colder clear night tonight with all elevations in the low 40’s.

Outlook: The break from this southern stream will be short lived with moisture rotating around the southern ridge by Tuesday and entering the west. This will mean steadily increasing fuel for convective showers through the week topping out by Thursday.

For 7/25/10: For Today: We are continuing to sit right on the edge of the southern plume but the moisture is staying to our south. Today will look a lot like yesterday with mostly sunny skies dominating but with very isolated thundershowers building over the higher terrain with the heat of the day and spilling into the valleys.

Temperatures: Drier air had lows holding right on the 45 degree mark for all elevations. Daytime highs will climb before we see cloud cover to 69 degrees for the north end of the valley and 76 for Gunnison. Tonight will offer another low like last night holding to the mid 40’s valley wide.

Outlook: Drier air is set to move into the west through the beginning of the week with the monsoonal flow holding to our south. Convective thundershowers will remain a possibility but of the hit or miss variety. This will be the trend until we see the monsoonal pattern shift so carry a layer on all adventures and get an early start to stay dry.

For 7/24/10: For Today: The southern plume is continuing to back off to the south and east but trapped remnants from our west will feed more convective activity through this afternoon. We will see mostly sunny skies dominating for the morning but look for the slow increase in cloud cover and finally thundershowers on the higher terrain by the afternoon.

Temperatures: Lows were cooler with the clear skies with Crested Butte reporting 44 degrees and Gunnison 46. Daytime highs will stay on the cooler side with all elevations holding to the 70’s. Tonight will feel a lot like last night with lows hovering right around the 45 degree mark under clearer conditions.

Outlook: We are seeing mixed conditions across the west with the southern plume moving east but some moisture working around the ridge in the west. We can expect a mix of sun early and convective activity through the afternoons into next week. Get an early start to stay dry or be prepared.

For 7/23/10: For Today: Drier air is starting to pump into the west pushing the southern plume further south and east and regional radar is mostly quiet this morning. This will mean thundershowers likely holding off until the afternoon and forming under normal convective circumstances. This will mean more rain potential through the afternoon but more scattered with windows of sunshine.

Temperatures: Lows have stayed mild with the lingering cloud cover with Crested Butte reporting 47 degrees overnight and Gunnison only dropping to 49. Highs will stay mild topping out at 70 for the north end of the valley while Gunnison hits 78 degrees. Tonight will be a little cooler as skies continue to clear with lows dropping back to or below 45.

Outlook: A more western influence is pushing the plume back to the south and this will mean drier conditions into the weekend. Thundershowers will remain a real threat but should be limited to the classic afternoon variety with plenty of sunshine early. Plan accordingly and be prepared but definitely get outside.

For 7/22/10: For Today: The southern plume is continuing to hold strong with a direct stream of moisture stretching all the way to Mexico. Regional radar is showing thunder cells moving in our direction out of the southwest with a steady stream promising more thundershowers starting early and continuing throughout the day.

Temperatures: Lows were colder than we have been seeing with Crested Butte reporting 47 degrees while Gunnison held at 50. Daytime highs will be cool again with the cloud cover and intermittent showers with Crested Butte topping out at 68 degrees while Gunnison pushes 75 with longer gaps of sunshine. Look for another cooler night tonight as skies clear a bit dropping to the high 40’s for all elevations.

Outlook: We will see another blocking ridge build between us and the southern plume by Friday but there will be enough residual moisture to fuel consistent afternoon thundershowers through the weekend. Look for longer sunny windows but conditions will remain mixed and any plans should include a contingency for rain.

For 7/21/10: For Today: As the high pressure ridge in the south has moved east it has allowed the pent up moisture to surge through causing the widespread rain and thundershowers that are dominating. Regional radar is showing more moisture spreading into our area and rain and thundershowers will be likely by noon. Look for high winds keeping it all moving quickly but with strong cells.

Temperatures: The thick cloud cover has moderated temperatures with lows overnight holding to 51 degrees for Crested Butte and 54 degrees for Gunnison. Highs today will be cooler than forecast with rain topping out in the low 70’s for the north and 80 for the south. Lows will be warm again tonight with more thundershowers possible.

Outlook: The combination of the wet from the south and west will clear through Thursday but lingering moisture in the flow will fuel convective activity through the end of the week and the weekend. We will see much more sunshine but thundershowers through the afternoons are likely.

For 7/20/10: For Today: We are starting the morning with an ultra saturated atmosphere and this will translate to strong convective activity through the afternoon. We are seeing southern moisture combining with a weak pacific wave from the west and regional radar is showing a stream of moisture moving in our direction early with more expected this afternoon.

Temperatures: Cloud cover kept the whole area warm with Crested Butte only dropping to 53 degrees and Gunnison at 54. Daytime highs will be moderated by the clouds as well with Crested Butte expecting 74 degrees and Gunnison just topping 80. Tonight will offer more mild temperatures with heavy cloud cover and nocturnal storms possible.

Outlook: The one two punch of moisture from the west and south will keep conditions active into Thursday. Storms will remain scattered and hit or miss but we should see some much needed wetting rains from slow moving cells.

For 7/19/10: For Today: The beginning of the changes we were expecting in the western weather pattern are falling into place and today will look a lot like yesterday with just enough moisture lifting north to fuel scattered thundershowers this afternoon. Look for one more day of the really warm temperatures so the cloud cover and an isolated shower will be a nice relief.

Temperatures: With the clearer skies lows dropped back to the mid 40’s with Crested Butte reporting 44 degrees and 47 for Gunnison. Highs will be slightly cooler with 79 degrees expected for the north end of the valley while Gunnison hits 87. Lows tonight will look a lot like last night hovering again in the mid 40’s.

Outlook: Tuesday will be our day of transition as the ridge to the south pushes east and the monsoonal flow returns to the area. We will see cooler temperatures and more consistent afternoon showers through Thursday before we dry again into the weekend.

For 7/18/10: For Today: We have more of the same hot weather on tap for today but there will be a better chance for some thundershowers spreading more consistently over the valley this afternoon. Regional radar is showing small cells to our west which will build with the heat of the day and the associated thundershowers will be hit or miss but you will want to be prepared if you are heading to the higher terrain.

Temperatures: Lingering cloud cover kept temperatures in check with Crested Butte reporting 48 degrees and Gunnison hovering at 49. Daytime highs will cool by a couple degrees but the north end of the valley will still hit 79 degrees while Gunnison climbs to 88. Tonight’s lows will hold in the mid 40’s again.

Outlook: Changes in the western weather pattern will start to allow more moisture up into the area through the beginning of the week. Temperatures will remain warm but we may start to see some much needed rain from convective activity through the middle of the week.

For 7/17/10: For Today: Nothing has changed in the western weather pattern but that moisture in the southwest is starting to try to work it’s way into the area. We will see mostly sunny skies all day but these continued hot temperatures will activate any available moisture through the afternoon and clouds are likely with an isolated thundershower not out of the question.

Temperatures: Lows were back up to the mid 40’s with Crested Butte reporting 44 degrees and 46 degrees for Gunnison. Highs today will hit their peak for the week with 81 degrees for Crested Butte while Gunnison presses for 90. Look for another night in the mid to low 40’s tonight.

Outlook: Moisture is starting to build in the south again and the ridge blocking our area will be gone by the beginning of the week. Look for drier conditions to hold through Sunday but by Monday night we will see those thundershowers returning.

For 7/16/10: For Today: Hot and dry conditions are continuing to hold across the west and we will see another sunny day with little cloud cover as any moisture stays clear of the area. Look for what little cloud cover that does develop to be limited to the higher terrain.

Temperatures: Lows were cooler than we’ve seen earlier in the week with Crested Butte reporting 40 degrees and 42 degrees for Gunnison. Highs will rebound quickly with another super warm day expected with highs hitting 80 degrees for Crested Butte and 88 degrees for Gunnison. Tonight will be a lot like last night with lows hovering at or just above 40 degrees.

Outlook: This high pressure ridge will start to slip allowing more moisture up into the west. This will mean a slight increase in the potential for convective afternoon thundershowers but these will be widely scattered this weekend and limited to the highest terrain. Definitely not worth changing any plans over but be prepared.

For 7/15/10: For Today: The high pressure ridge has set up to our south and opened the door for the hot dry conditions from the west. We will see clear skies through most of the day but look for some big popcorn cloud formations building over the higher terrain by the afternoon.

Temperatures: Lows were warm valley wide with Crested Butte reporting 44 degrees and 46 for Gunnison. Highs will start the super warm climb today with Crested Butte reaching 77 degrees while Gunnison hits 87. Look for more mild lows tonight with all elevations holding to the mid 40’s.

Outlook: Hot and dry will be our dominant features through the end of the week and the weekend with that southern plume holding well to our south and east. Be sure to have plenty of water available and be prepared for the hot temperatures.

For 7/14/10: For Today: Remnants from the moisture this weekend are continuing to slowly clear the area and significantly drier conditions are expected for today but especially tomorrow. In the interim you will want to expect sunny and hot conditions for most of the day but will also need to be prepared for very isolated thunder cells through the late afternoon building on the higher terrain.

Temperatures: Lows were moderated by the nocturnal thundershowers and cloud cover with Crested Butte holding at a balmy 46 degrees and Gunnison only dropping to 49 degrees. Highs will start their climb today with 75 expected for Crested Butte and 84 for Gunnison. Lows tonight will stay mild but be cooler than last night holding closer to 40.

Outlook: Models are continuing to show drier conditions in the west but the coinciding increase in temperatures through the southwest is helping to produce storms. Expect highs climbing to 90 for Gunnison by the weekend and mostly sunny skies on the whole but stay prepared just in case for very scattered thunder cells.

For 7/13/10: For Today: Drier air is continuing to work it’s way into the region but the super warm temperatures are still activating any remnants. We will see very isolated showers developing along the higher terrain through the heat of the day but resulting cells won’t be worth planning around, you will just need to be prepared.

Temperatures: Lows are indicative of the warmer temperatures in the west with Crested Butte reporting 41 degrees and Gunnison holding to 43 degrees. Daytime highs will creep to 73 for Crested Butte and 83 for Gunnison. Look for more warmer lows overnight with all elevations above 40 degrees.

Outlook: We will continue to dry through the week with almost no available moisture in the west after Wednesday afternoon and any activity produced before then will hold on the highest terrain. Temperatures are the weather news with highs expected to climb above 80 at the northend of the valley and to 90 for Gunnison by the weekend.

For 7/12/10: For Today: The last hurrah from this southern moisture has cleared the area this morning but expect areas of fog and low clouds before we dry out through the day. Today should offer some big popcorn clouds later in the day but no thundershowers as the dry air settles in.

Temperatures: Lows dropped with the clear skies this morning with Crested Butte hitting 36 degrees and Gunnison reporting 39 degrees. Daytime highs will climb under sunny and dry conditions hitting 72 degrees for CB and Gunnison will reach 80. Look for temperatures to warm by a couple degrees for all elevations tonight.

Outlook: A drier pattern sets up for this week with the western weather pattern drawing from the west and pushing the southern moisture back to the east. We will see some of the hottest conditions of the summer heading into the weekend with the monsoon on hold. Be prepared as you head to the higher terrain but conditions are looking great all the way into next weekend.

For 7/11/10: For Today: Drier air is starting to move into the west but there are still some strong remnants from the original southern flow that will offer more thundershowers today. These will remain in the hit or miss category forming over the higher terrain first but you will want to be prepared if you are starting an adventure or project later in the day.

Temperatures: Crested Butte reported a low of 39 degrees and Gunnison popped to just above the 40 degree mark at 41 degrees. Daytime highs will top out at 70 for Crested Butte while the south end of the valley climbs toward 79 degrees. Look for another low tonight hovering just at or below 40.

Outlook: We are starting to see changes in the pattern that will mean drier conditions through the better part of this new week. A western dominated flow will have us in a dry slot pinching off the southern plume with the return of above normal temperatures and sunny skies. This will hold into Thursday before we start to see further changes.

For 7/10/10: For Today: We are seeing some residual cloud cover early but nothing has changed in the amount of precipitable moisture or the forecast. We can still expect mostly sunny skies through the better part of the day but there is the definite possibility of isolated thundershowers building on the higher terrain through the heat of the day and spilling into the lower valleys. Plan accordingly and have layers available.

Temperatures: Lows were kept in moderation by the cloud cover with Crested Butte reporting 43 degrees and Gunnison holding to 45 degrees. Daytime highs will climb by a couple degrees with the north end of the valley expected to reach 72 degrees while Gunnison climbs to 79. Look for slightly cooler lows with clearer skies tonight but continuing to hover right around 40.

Outlook: Drier air will build into the area through Sunday and Monday with only limited fuel available for convective showers. You will need to stay prepared through tomorrow but we are looking at warmer and drier conditions through the better part of the coming week.
