New snow and a bunch on the way.
For 1/21/10: For Today: The next system in this line of pacific waves is setting up early and we have seen some positive changes in the predicted trajectory and we will see heavy snow into Saturday. The forecast has shifted from inches to the likelihood of a foot or more before skies start to clear on Sunday night. The added dynamic of this first warmer southern wave giving way to a colder northern flow later in the system bodes well for more efficient snow production.
Warmer conditions held again overnight with Crested Butte reporting 11 degrees at 2am while Gunnison dropped to just 10 degrees at the same time. Daytime highs will hover in the mid to high 20’s for all elevations. Look for another mild overnight low right around 10 degrees for all elevations or higher with the heavy snow expected through tomorrow.
The inherent disorganization of this storm has turned into a positive as it developed allowing the mix of warm and colder influences. These dynamics allow for the greatest instability and this storm is shaping up to be just what we need with heavy snow and higher gusting winds. Thunder snow is also not out of the question as these components mix. Expect a strong avalanche cycle to follow but this will settle the weaker layers one way or another. It’s working, keep thinking snow.
