Mild early but cold air on the move.

For 1/7/10: For Today: The colder air that we were expecting to drop south overnight has hung up to the north with the divide protecting us from the initial push. Unfortunately, it looks like the reprieve is only temporary with the flow switching to the north early, we will see colder conditions building through the day. It’s -8 in Denver but Gunnison was reporting 28 degrees at 3am.

Overnight lows actually dropped early with Crested Butte weighing in at 13 degrees at 7am and Gunnison at 15 degrees. This is a good indication of the developing pattern and temperatures won’t climb too much higher than the high teens even with the clearer conditions this afternoon. Tonight will bring the colder temperatures we were looking for last night with all elevations well below 0.

Don’t be fooled by the sunshine today as we see skies clear from the north and this colder air drop into the lower valleys. This cold will dominate through today with some slight warming in the forecast but I think this could be overdone. Expect gusting winds today with colder windchill values and be sure to pack the appropriate layers.
