Cold and clear for the New Year.
For 1/1/10: For Today: Happy New Year! The next round of pacific moisture that we were expecting is continuing it’s approach from the northwest leaving us in the sunny conditions for most of the day. We can expect high clouds building through the afternoon with snow in the forecast overnight and continuing through Saturday when we will see our best chance at some accumulation. This is looking to favor areas on the other side of the divide but we will get a swing at a few inches before it’s over.
Overnight lows showed the classic inversion with Crested Butte reporting -1 while Gunnison was significantly colder weighing in at -11 degrees early this morning. Daytime highs will warm under the sunny skies but will remain cold in the mid teens for the higher elevations and the low teens for Gunnison. Tonight will be much warmer for everyone with the cloud cover and snow moving down from the south but temperatures will still hover around 0.
We are going to need to see some pretty significant changes in the current pattern for this moisture to really find our area. As it stands it will favor the north but there are other components threatening to wrap it back around into our area but we’ll have to see how it shapes up today. Expect another cold clear day and be sure to layer up.
