A Snowy Day.

For 12/30/09: For Today: The front end of this next wave is pushing into the area early and will offer strong squally snow showers through tomorrow with upwards of 6+” possible if it will settle in for long enough. These waves of pacific moisture promise to move quickly which will mean some blowing snow and definite visibility issues. Temperatures are set to stay moderate with this wave but look for strong winds to create significantly colder windchill values.

Overnight lows were a great indicator of this new pattern as we swapped the negative teens of the night before for 13 degrees in Crested Butte and 8 degrees for Gunnison. Daytime highs will climb to the mid 20’s for all elevations but, as I mentioned before, the windchills will be significantly colder with the wind gusting to 30mph. Tonight will be another warm one with lows in the teens again as the snow holds into tomorrow morning.

We have seen some favorable shifts in the trajectory of this moisture that has taken us from the collection of traces category to a real swing at some snowfall. The duration will be the limiting factor but expect some heavy snow squalls. Bundle up today and expect rapidly changing conditions.
