Clouds early but no snow yet.

For 12/29/09: For Today: This flow from the southwest has settled in overnight and we are seeing thick cloud cover but not enough dynamics to get the snow falling. This first round was expected to be weak and that’s what we are seeing but so far it has mixed the more aggressive parts of the inversion clear of the area and this will be a relief as temperatures warm. We can expect snow showers throughout the day with only an inch or two likely by tomorrow.

Overnight lows show these warmer temperatures with Crested Butte reporting a relatively balmy 6 degrees while Gunnison slipped just below 0 to -1. Daytime highs will rebound even without the sun with the milder flow out of the southwest bringing all elevations to the high teens or twenties for the ridge tops. Overnight lows will be even warmer tonight with the low teens likely valley wide.

The current weather pattern is complicated but not very impressive with the storms lacking the dynamics and energy to really produce some significant snowfall. Look for a collection of traces for most of the valley resulting in just a couple inches by Thursday but the higher elevations could see squally snows putting us into the 4-8” category.
