A sunny start but cold air setting up.

For 12/24/09: For Today: We have entered the gap between waves of pacific moisture in the west and we should see mostly sunny skies dominating for the better part of the extended forecast. Some isolated remnants are possible over the higher terrain today but the clear skies this morning look like they will hold. We can expect a significantly colder air dropping into the area under this northwestern flow and today will be the day of transition.

Overnight lows were moderate with Crested Butte dropping to 4 degrees and Gunnison held right in step at 3 degrees. Temperatures will rise slowly even with the sunny skies with our highs only topping out in the high teens for today. Tonight will bring the first really cold overnight temperatures with the December inversion setting up for a final hurrah with temperatures slipping below 0 and starting a cold trend that will hold through the weekend.

We are starting to see a fairly complicated pattern build in the west with a blocking low over the central US stalling the weather progression. We will see a colder northwestern flow mostly effecting northern Colorado but cold air will creep over to our side of the divide. Expect colder temperatures and gusting winds as the pattern shifts and be sure to respect the frostbite potential.
