Ultra Cold Start.

For 12/11/09: For Today: We have entered our day of transition for this next round of moisture with high clouds expected to build through the afternoon with a weak wave fueling some snow overnight. This will begin the march of multiple pacific waves that will move through the area for this weekend as a zonal pattern builds in the western jet stream. These systems are fairly weak but we will see a few inches at a time until Monday when skies will clear.

Overnight lows have plummeted again as the inversion traps the cold air in the lower valleys with Crested Butte reporting -12 degrees while Gunnison managed to get to -24 degrees this morning. Daytime highs will rebound slowly with another cold day expected for Gunnison just topping 10 degrees while Crested but hits the high teens. Look for milder overnight lows tonight thanks to the cloud cover but it will still drop to the negative teens for all elevations.

These waves of pacific moisture area stacked to the west and will fuel snow in varied degrees through the weekend but accumulations will be limited. We have the right dynamics with the warmer western moisture and trapped cold air but snow will be hit or miss. Continue to bundle up today as the colder clear conditions hold on and we continue to see significant frostbite potential.
