Snow building.

For 12/7/09: For Today: We are waking up to the gap between these systems with the more northern flow holding to the north along the divide yesterday. Under this northern front we were left with the front end of the warmer southern air mass that has built in today. We will see the snow building through the day with squally showers to start and heavy consistent snow through tonight. This will offer the potential for up to 12” by Wednesday morning.

Overnight lows were warmer with this southern air with our low of 8 degrees in Crested Butte coming at midnight before temperatures rose back to about 11 degrees. Gunnison was consistently colder at 5 degrees this morning. Daytime highs will hold in the mid teens but high gusting winds will present significantly colder windchill values. Look for another mild night tonight under heavy snow with the low teens likely valley wide.

This storm is going to be a big weather event with heavy snow coming in squalls early and more steadily by this afternoon. Expect high winds to complicate visibility and make for very hazardous road conditions. Today will be the build up to this moisture so prepare for changing conditions as the pieces fall into place. It’s not a done deal yet so keep doing that snow dance.
