Clouds building and snow on the way.

For 12/5/09: For Today: It’s time to do that snow dance. We are seeing all the right components falling into place for a heavy snowmaker with waves of pacific moisture coming in as a one two punch starting tonight and continuing into Tuesday. This first round through tomorrow will be cold with high gusting winds especially on the higher terrain but it sets the stage for a much healthier warm system from the west for Monday.

Overnight lows were warmer than we have been seeing with Crested Butte reporting -4 degrees while Gunnison was lower at -7 degrees. Daytime highs will have a hard time gaining under the cloudy conditions with highs holding to the high teens or low 20’s for all elevations and high gusting winds producing significantly colder windchill values. Tonight’s lows will hover closer to 0 with the single digits likely as we see heavy cloud cover and snow through tomorrow.

This first colder system will offer somewhere in the 4-6” range but high winds will make a real estimate hard. The bigger snowmaker comes as the warmer and wetter system from the west rubs up against the leftover cold on Monday offering a swing at much more snow in the 12”+ category. We’ll need all the right components to fall into place to reap the full potential so think snow.
