A very cold morning.
For 10/26/09: For Today: We are seeing the front end of a wintry wave out of the north set up and the first effects are the cold clear conditions this morning. Look for mostly sunny skies to dominate today but temperatures will struggle to reach much above 40 even with the sunshine. This cold system will be building steadily through the day with a pacific wave dropping into our area from the north that will mean the potential for heavy snow through Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Overnight lows have hit the lowest point of the season so far with Crested Butte bottoming out at 9 degrees while Gunnison stayed a couple degrees warmer at a balmy 12 degrees. We will see sunny skies today but daytime highs will hold right around 40 degrees for most elevations. Tonight will offer some initial cloud cover from the northwest which help insulate against another super cold overnight low but another night in the teens is likely.
This system posturing to the north will offer an active weather week with heavy snow likely through the middle of the week and a cold front helping the snow production. We can expect a few inches on the ground by Thursday with much more possible at the higher elevations. The most significant consideration will be the cold temperatures so be prepared.
