Partly sunny but cold with snow on the ground.

For 9/22/09: It is the first official day of fall but it’s looking and feeling a lot more like the middle of winter. The cold front from the north has settled into our area as expected but the moisture has also moved a little further to the east than initially forecast. The winds through yesterday morning were responsible for bringing us the shot of snow but they have also cycled the brunt of this moisture off to the east putting us right on the edge of the northern system.

Overnight lows started cold around dark and then dropped a couple more degrees with Crested Butte reporting 26 degrees this morning and 28 degrees for Gunnison. Daytime highs will climb to the mid 40’s for Crested Butte and the low to mid 50’s for Gunnison. Look for another cold overnight low in the 20’s valley wide.

This snow will melt off early at the valley floors but temperatures will remain cold for the next couple days with moisture wrapping around from the north to fuel more isolated snow and rain showers. The brunt of this will remain an upslope event on the other side of the divide but we are right on the line of warmer western conditions and the recirculating cold front. Expect a mix of conditions and definitely be prepared for the cold with temperatures warming slowly through the week.
