An unexpected surge and stormy conditions.

For 8/6/09: An unexpected surge in the subtropical plume has brought moisture up into our area and regional radar is indicating much more active conditions than were initially forecast. More significantly the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Fire Warning due to the increased severity and lightning potential presented by today’s thunder cells. Expect fast moving cells dropping heavy rains and lots of lightning.

Overnight lows were warm with the cloud cover building in from the south with Crested Butte reporting just 44 degrees while Gunnison held to 49 degrees. Daytime highs will climb to the mid 70’s and low 80’s depending on elevation but the storms and gusting winds will keep it feeling cooler. The cold front we are expecting from the north will still enter the picture overnight with colder overnight lows expected as skies clear.

This unexpected surge from the southern moisture will combine with the warm southern conditions offering the potential for strong thunder cells throughout the day. We will return to the forecast pattern by Friday with drier western conditions building into the weekend but today will be active. Get the inside projects done or plan your adventures based on escapability.
