Nocturnal thunder cells and lingering cloud cover early.

For 7/30/09: We are seeing little to no organization in the flow of the western weather pattern with a weak pacific system pushing through northern Colorado on the other side of the divide while a southern branch holds to the south. The result has us in the middle collecting bits of both. Regional radar is showing thunder cells on the other side of the divide that will brush our area early with a drier pocket cued to the west which will really dictate for most of the day.

Overnight lows were once again moderated by nocturnal storms but still dropped to 40 degrees in Crested Butte this morning and 44 degrees in Gunnison. Daytime highs will climb early but we are seeing plenty of moisture to fuel convective cloud cover and winds that will keep it feeling cool with the high 60’s and low 70’s likely.

Winds should be a little slower today but the glancing blow of this northern wave will mean variables for the higher terrain. Definitely pack layers and be prepared for all conditions as you head out. More settled conditions will build into the weekend but models are still differing on the outcomes so stay tuned for updates.
