A dirty western flow keeping the weather active.
For 7/29/09: Moisture converging on Utah is starting a stream of moisture to our west that eventually feeds the lines of storm cells that move into our area through the late afternoon and evening. We will see another round of these through this afternoon that join the natural convective activity forming over our mountains and offer an increased chance of activity. The cooler temperatures associated with this cold front to the north have helped limit the thunder cells but this warmer flow from the west fortifies the nighttime activity.
Overnight lows dropped last night even with the cloud cover left over from the later storms with Crested Butte reporting 39 degrees and Gunnison staying a little warmer at 44 degrees. Daytime highs will hold to the low 70’s for the north end of the valley while Gunnison climbs to high 70’s.
Drier air is continuing to cycle in from the west and these remnants from the north and south will offer a window of dry conditions by the weekend. Until then, expect afternoon thundershowers holding later than usual into the nights. Some models are indicating the southern plume building early next week which may be the late start of the monsoon season.
