Heavy storms overnight.

For 7/26/09: Strong thunder cells worked their way out of the west and northwest overnight dropping .22” of rain in a very short amount of time in Crested Butte. Regional radar is showing some storms still to our west but skies should clear through the morning. This window will be brief with plenty of moisture to fuel thundershowers again this afternoon.

Overnight lows were moderated by the cloud cover and rain dropping to just 48 degrees in Crested Butte and holding at 50 degrees in Gunnison. Daytime highs will be cooler than yesterday with the higher elevations holding at 69 degrees while Gunnison and the south end of the valley see the mid to low 70’s. Look for the possibility of more cloud cover lingering overnight offering lows in the 40’s.

Precipitable water levels have risen through the last 24 hours to the .75” plus range which means plenty of fuel for convective activity. The cooler temperatures will hold these off for a while but we can expect an active afternoon with strong cells and wetting rains. Plan activities with escapability in mind and be prepared for all conditions.
