High pressure setting up.

For 6/16/09: Drier air is continuing to feed into the west and we will see decreased moisture again today to fuel afternoon thundershowers. Look for the light high altitude cloud cover we are seeing early to thicken into the afternoon offering isolated showers that will start on the highest terrain before dipping to the lower valleys but these will be much more scattered than yesterday.

Overnight lows are reflecting the clearer skies over night with Crested Butte reporting 30 degrees this morning while Gunnison stayed warmer bottoming out at 38 degrees. Highs will be warmer today than they have been with clearer skies offering a longer window of sunshine driving the temperatures up to the 60’s for the north end of the valley while the south end of the valley will flirt with the 70’s. Look for another cold overnight low with these clear skies expected to hold.

High pressure from the southwest is going to continue to feed in our direction but the moisture from the pacific will also continue to pollute the blue skies. This will mean more scattered and isolated thundershowers through the afternoons this week with some pockets potentially providing more fuel than others. You will want to remain prepared as you head out and pack extra layers especially if you’re headed to the higher terrain.
