A mostly sunny start to Memorial Day.
For 5/25/09: As expected the brunt of this latest round has now cleared the area and this will mean a little sunshine for Memorial Day. You will need to be prepared for thundershowers building with the heat of the day as the saturated atmosphere feeds strong convective storms. These will produce faster moving windy cells that you will need to be prepared for.
Overnight lows dropped under the clearing conditions with Crested Butte reporting 35 degrees while Gunnison stayed a couple degrees warmer again reporting 39 degrees this morning. We will creep into the 60’s but sunny skies will also mean this big popcorn cloud formations building pretty quickly with gusting winds. Overnight lows will drop again as skies clear under the cooler temperatures into the evening.
Today will present one of the classic weather traps and you will need to be prepared. The moisture laden atmosphere is carrying plenty of fuel for convective thunderstorms so once we start to see the sunnier conditions assume that the wick has been lit. The resulting storms will be fast moving dropping heavy rains and with saturated soils this could mean Flash Flood potential. Have a great day but stay alert.
