The lull before the storm.

For 4/10/09: We are still sitting in the gap between waves of pacific moisture this morning but systems are converging on our area and we are in for a couple days of interesting weather. A switch to a southern flow through today will mean a warm system lifting into the area that will offer a mix of rain and snow to the lower valleys with the snow line still unsure. Expect gusting winds as this system sets up with a thundershower likely before the heavier system sets in.

Temperatures will be the dictator of how this progresses and we are starting off the day with fairly mild overnight lows with Crested Butte reporting 17 degrees while Gunnison was a little warmer at 19 degrees. At least partly sunny conditions early will allow for a fairly quick rebound with highs expected to top out in the 40’s. We will hover precariously close to the freezing mark with this mild southern system with highs tomorrow in the high 30’s and warmer into Sunday.

This system building into the area is developing on a proven path for us gathering subtropical moisture and lifting through to the north. The question is at which point it will encounter the colder temperatures which will cause the best snow production. Be prepared for the full mixed bag of conditions through the next 48 hours and stay tuned for updates.
