The calm before the storm.
For 3/29/09: The heavy cloud cover we were expecting early has stalled but not quit as we hover on the lull before this storm settles in. Look for cloud cover increasing steadily through the morning but snow will hold off until later in the afternoon. High winds will mark the real change with gusts to 40+mph expected through this evening and into tomorrow.
Temperatures have stayed cool with these clear skies overnight dropping to 6 degrees in Crested Butte while Gunnison stayed a little warmer at 11 degrees. High cloud cover early will slow the temperature rebound but we should still see the mid to low 30’s valley wide before the day is over. Tonight’s lows will be a very different deal with the high winds and cold front settling in. Actual temperatures will likely hold in the teens but the windchills will be significantly lower if we see the high winds we are expecting.
This next storm is a classic spring snowmaker coming in with high winds, good dynamics and moisture but the aspects that make it strong may also limit it’s longevity. The higher elevations could see 12+” while the lower valleys see 5-8”. Don’t be fooled by the relative calm this morning and be prepared especially if you are traveling this afternoon or tonight. Layer up as you head out today and expect changes.
