Snowing and blowing early.

For 3/23/09: This system has arrived late and the high gusting winds are keeping everything moving quickly. We saw the dry slot between waves for most of the day yesterday and the next pocket of moisture has stayed further north than initially anticipated. We are seeing wrap around moisture from the northwest pushing into our area this morning with regional radar showing a pretty good concentration that will keep the snow falling through today.

Temperatures stayed moderate overnight hitting 21 degrees this morning in Crested Butte but the wind has wind chill values down to the single digits. Gunnison’s METAR site at the airport is not reporting temperatures but the wind is reporting and the same windchills can be expected in the single digits. Look for a high today in the mid 30’s valley wide but with the continued high winds it will feel much colder.

We can expect the heaviest snow we will see out of this wave today but it is lacking the organization we were hoping for and it will limit accumulations in town to the 3-5” category unless we see some changes. Expect slick travel conditions and if you are driving check flyingcracker.com’s road report for closures and chain requirements. Bundle up today.
