A slow start but snow on the way.

For 2/7/09: This first round of moisture has stayed to the north with the majority of the moisture holding to the other side of the divide. We will see more of this scattered cloud cover and squally snow showers today as the flow switches to the southwest with the warm wet arm of this southern storm lifting into the area for tonight and Sunday.

The winds we saw yesterday scoured the inversion clear of the lower valleys as evidenced by the overnight temperatures. Gunnison reported and overnight low of 7 degrees while Crested Butte still stayed a little warmer at 10 degrees. We will rebound quickly especially with a mix of sun and snow early to highs hovering right on the freezing mark and above. The warmer temperatures associated with this next round will mean mixed precipitation in the lower valleys below 8000ft mostly to our east and west but snow levels will drop into Sunday.

Just how much snow we will see is still in question but we are seeing multiple waves that will offer snow through Sunday, Tuesday and again Thursday. This round developing today has the potential to become a real snowmaker but we’ll have to see how the dynamics develop over the course of the day. Layer up and be prepared for all conditions as you head out today.
