Snow on the way.

For 2/6/09: The high winds this morning are the beginning of the bigger change in the western weather pattern that will bring us snow through this weekend and into next week. For today we will sit on the more southern end of a northern wave and this will mean a mix of sun and snow with high winds blowing everything through pretty quickly.

Temperatures are showing the change more than the weather so far with our overnight low in Crested Butte of 7 degrees being reported at 1am while Gunnison dipped just below 0 to -2 degrees. Crested Butte is already showing a current temperature of 30 degrees by 7am and the lower valleys will fall into check with these high winds scouring the inversion. This first wave will usher in the mild southwestern flow with temperatures holding right around the freezing mark through the weekend.

Our best chance at the measurable snow will come Saturday and Sunday as subtropical moisture is tapped from the south offering heavy snow into next week. The dynamics building though today are moving too fast to really predict but snow showers are likely with a few inches of accumulation possible into Saturday morning. Layer up as you head out today and be prepared for changes.
