A day of transition.

For 2/5/09: This high pressure ridge is on the move and should cycle clear of our area by tomorrow pushing in a wave of pacific moisture from the west. Look for gusting winds through this afternoon introducing high altitude cloud cover that will thicken overnight and produce snow showers by the morning.

Temperatures will remain mild for the higher elevations today with the wind helping to finally mix this stubborn inversion clear of the area. Last night Gunnison reported a low of -9 degrees while Crested Butte hovered right on 0. We will see temperatures rebound quickly with more of these super clear and sunny conditions but look for the lower capped valleys to stay almost 10 degrees cooler. Cloud cover will help insulate tonight’s lows and get all elevations back in check but we will likely hover right around 0 again.

Snow will build into the area tomorrow with the potential for a few inches if the right components fall into place but it could be one of those grey days collecting traces. The real snow and more complicated dynamics will develop through Saturday with our best chance at some accumulation coming on Sunday. Either way we will see snow through most of the weekend but just how much is still in question so do that snow dance.
