A big sleeper storm.
For 1/25/09: So the more dynamic components that we were looking for to really get this snow going have fallen into place. A cold trough that is slowly dipping south out of Wyoming is pushing the dominant flow just enough to the south that the brunt is cycling through right over our area. The resort has reported 14” new today with regional radar showing more moisture on the way.
Temperatures have remained very warm and the wet snow is an indication of just how close to the freezing mark we are. Overnight lows only dropped to 27 degrees in Gunnison while Crested Butte hit 26 degrees. We will top out again in the mid to low 30’s with Gunnison pushing perilously close to the mixed precipitation mark with these warm temperatures. We will see this colder air from the north trying to dip into our area by the beginning of the week but there are no big changes in the forecast.
Look for heavy snow continuing today with gusting winds at the higher elevations making for some squally low visibility conditions. There is plenty of moisture still slated to move through our area for today and likely continuing into the beginning of the week and another foot or two is not out of the question the way these dynamics are shaping up. If you are traveling today expect very sloppy conditions and check flyingcracker.com’s road report for the current conditions and restrictions.
