An active pattern in the west.
For 1/4/09: The better part of this latest system has run it’s course and cycled clear of the area with barometric pressure rising and the telltale cold temperatures setting up early. We will see scattered remnants feeding us snow showers through the day but the organized moisture has sifted through to the south.
The cold front that has settled in on it’s heals is already showing effects with the overnight low in Crested Butte dropping to -6 degrees this morning while Gunnison stayed warmer at 4 degrees. This is proof positive that the inversion has cleared the area but the lower valleys will be capped once again until we see mixing due to the system on Monday so look for a cold clear night tonight with temperatures well below 0. Today’s temperatures will rebound slowly with the heavy cloud cover with highs only expected to reach the high teens or low 20’s. Gusting winds will present some cold windchill values so be sure to dress warmly as you head out.
The western pattern will be active through the upcoming week with pacific systems stacking in the west offering snow in varied degrees into next weekend. The dynamics are looking complicated but there may be a snowmaker lurking out there so stay tuned.
