A bonus storm kicks off a wild weather ride.

For 12/13/08: Today is promising to be an exciting weather day. We are seeing the tail end of this warmer bonus storm that dropped the fresh candy coating on us overnight start to cycle clear of the area but regional radar is still showing impressive moisture moving in our direction from the west so a few more inches will be likely while the next round postures. You’ll know when we are changing to the next colder system when the wind starts to blow. Look for gusts to 50 mph at the higher elevations with slightly lower expected in the valleys.

Temperatures will also be a significant indicator popping to 35 degrees in Crested Butte and 38 degrees in Gunnison early today but look for the wind to bring cold. Even with heavy snow overnight lows will find the single digits and only creep slightly higher for tomorrow. Look for highs in the teens valley wide through Sunday and Monday with overnight lows dropping below 0.

We are seeing that perfect scenario build with these systems with the warm wet from the south rubbing up against the cold from the north and these good dynamics will feed a variety of weather conditions including the possibility of thundersnow. The next 24 to 48 hours are promising a wild ride so be sure to bundle up as you head out and definitely be prepared for all conditions.
