For 3/7/10: For Today: This stream of moisture is lifting out of the south but has continued to stay to our west early. As the trajectory shifts through the morning we will see clouds thickening and snow through the afternoon and into tonight. With this current north south orientation the cells are hit or miss and we’ll need the right components to fall into place to get what we are hoping for.
Overnight lows dropped under the continued clear skies with Crested Butte reporting 5 degrees and Gunnison 4 degrees. Daytime highs will rebound quickly while the sun shines hitting the mid 30’s but look for increased cloud cover and gusting winds through the afternoon. Snow tonight will keep temperatures warm with the teens a likely low for all elevations.
The weather pattern with these last couple systems has been just a little off with the waves just a little too weak. This wave will drop snow and estimates in the 3-6” range still hold but warm temperatures are not the best for snow production and what we see will come in warm and wet. Keep your fingers crossed and think snow.

For 3/6/10: For Today: A ridge of high pressure will be pushing through the area today with mostly sunny skies early seeing some high clouds by the evening. This gap between the pacific waves will keep us in beautiful spring like weather for today as the western weather pattern postures to push another southern system through the area. The best chance for accumulations has now been pushed off to start early Sunday and continue all day.
Overnight lows stayed mild as the clearing held off until this morning with Crested Butte reporting 9 degrees while Gunnison dipped to 3 degrees. Daytime highs will climb quickly with the sunshine topping out in the high 20’s and low 30’s for all elevations. More mixed conditions overnight tonight will likely produce another overnight low in the single digits like last night.
The next round of pacific moisture is taking a circuitous route along the west coast and down through the southwest before starting it’s lift into our area. We will see a warm southern system lifting against a colder northern airmass through the day on Sunday with snow continuing into Monday. The convective potential will help produce snow but we need all the right pieces in place to reach the potential. Think snow.

For 3/5/10: For Today: As feared, this last storm’s big limiting factor was it’s own energy with high winds pushing it through faster than expected. We are continuing to see wrap around moisture dropping into the area from the north that will fuel scattered snow showers throughout the day that could drop another inch or two on us but these cells will be hit or miss. Look for skies clearing through the afternoon as we gap these weak pacific waves with mostly sunny conditions holding on through most of the day Saturday.
Overnight lows were mild with the heavy cloud cover and snow dropping to 13 degrees in Crested Butte and 12 degrees in Gunnison. Daytime highs will be limited by the cloud cover but a mild start will allow us to hit the low 30’s at most elevations. Look for significantly colder temperatures tonight with clear skies dropping to below 0 for most locations.
Snow will come in squally bursts today and likely be accompanied by high gusting winds. Layer up to account for changes and windchills significantly colder than the expected highs. We are going to need some beneficial changes for Saturday night’s storm to offer any real accumulation so do that snow dance and think snow.

For 3/4/10: For Today: This next wave of pacific moisture is continuing it’s slow approach with high clouds early today expected to build over the course of the day with snow on tap by the early evening. This system will start out warm with a cold front settling in to combine with the warmer wet southern flow providing pretty good dynamics and the best chance at a productive shot of snow we have seen in a while. Don’t get too excited because the moisture is limited but this combination has the potential to fuel a few strong squally showers.
Overnight lows were about what we have been seeing with Crested Butte reporting 7 degrees this morning and Gunnison dropped to 0. Daytime highs will remain warm through most of the afternoon with sun mixing with high clouds reaching the low 30’s for all elevations. Tonight’s lows will be harder to predict likely hitting around 10 degrees.
Today will present a full mixed bag of conditions with these dynamics building into the area with this next storm. Thundersnow will not be out of the question as we see a strong convective dynamic this evening with the warm and cold coming together. Snow totals will top out between 4-6” but getting there should be an interesting process.

For 3/3/10: For Today: Models are continuing to shift on their predictions as the western weather pattern continues to change ahead of these systems pushing in our direction. Thursday night now appears to present the best chance at accumulation but this storm’s performance may be stunted by it’s own energy with high gusting winds moving it through quicker than we would like. Until then look for high clouds to mix with sunshine with more mostly sunny conditions.
Overnight lows were a little warmer than expected with some cloud cover with Crested Butte holding at 7 degrees and Gunnison dropping to 1 degrees this morning. Daytime highs may be slightly moderated by the increased high clouds but look for the low 30’s for all elevations again. Overnight lows tonight will look a lot like last night in the single digits.
Layer up today with this mix of sun and high clouds but expect more pretty mild conditions. Changes are happening slower than expected but we will see snow by Thursday night.

For 3/2/10: For Today: We are continuing to see the same weak dynamics in the western weather pattern with this high pressure ridge holding strong and the pacific moisture only slowly creeping into our area. Models are backing off the prediction of snow by Wednesday and pushing it back to Thursday with these mostly sunny conditions holding a little longer. Temperatures are slated to stay above normal so enjoy this early taste of spring.
Overnight lows dropped back towards 0 with Crested Butte reporting 3 degrees and Gunnison dropping to -2 degrees. Daytime highs will reach the low 30’s again for all elevations with this trend continuing for the next couple days. Look for another overnight low a lot like last night with all elevations at or below 0.
Thursday night will now present our best chance at accumulations but there are still a number of changes that could effect this as the pattern continues to change. Get outside and enjoy these beautiful days and don’t forget your sunscreen.

For 3/1/10: For Today: The weak dynamics that we saw with this last system were strong enough to block the moisture in our area but not strong enough to make it snow. We are seeing the high pressure gap moving in a little earlier than expected today but look for some remaining snow showers over the higher terrain. Mostly sunny skies will dominate with some gusting winds helping to cool off what would be another unseasonably warm day.
Overnight lows were mild with Crested Butte reporting 8 degrees while Gunnison held to 11 degrees under the low clouds. Daytime highs will flirt with the mid 30’s again today but the winds could have it feeling more like the 20’s. Look for more clear skies tonight with all elevations dropping towards the 0 degree mark.
The rest of this week is proving to be a bit hard to forecast with the models differing on storm tracks for a system moving in on Wednesday. Until then look for more mild sunny conditions but be ready for changes later in the week.

For 2/28/10: For Today: This storm has turned out to be much to-do about nothing so far as the brunt moves well to our south leaving some scattered remnants for today, The real issue has been a lack of organized moisture and poor dynamics to get any snow falling. A colder shot from the north will drop into the area early today which will get some snow falling but this might just be too little too late.
Overnight lows were mild for the north end of the valley with Crested Butte reporting 15 degrees while Gunnison dropped under the clearer skies to 2 degrees. Daytime highs will be colder as this northern influence sets up with the low teens a likely high for all elevations. Heavier cloud cover and snow is supposed to dominate tonight but the colder air will push all areas to the single digits.
The tail end of this system will clear the area through the day on Monday with a high pressure ridge setting up for Tuesday and Wednesday. This will mean the return of sunny skies but temperatures will remain on the cool side. Layer up today and expect changes.

For 2/26/10: For Today: We have entered the gap between these pacific systems with high pressure and sunny skies expected to dominate through today. Look for increasing cloud cover tonight as the next pacific wave settles into the area but the brunt is expected to push to our south limiting the potential for any serious accumulation. We can expect warmer temperatures and wet snow through Saturday night with some lingering remnants clearing the area through the day on Sunday.
Overnight lows were fairly mild given the clear skies with Crested Butte reporting -2 degrees while Gunnison dropped a couple degrees lower to -5 degrees. We will see a pretty quick rebound with these super sunny skies with all elevations holding in the mid to low 20’s. Look for warmer temperatures tonight with the increasing cloud cover but this will mostly effect the north with the lower valleys still dropping below 0.
This next wave is looking pretty impressive on the radar early today but it is set to split with the better potential heading south of Colorado. We will see snow but only in the 3-6” range through Sunday morning. Don’t forget your sunscreen today.

For 2/25/10: For Today: This latest round of pacific moisture has moved through overnight with little snowfall and weak dynamics. We will see some snow lingering through the rest of the day focused mostly on the divide and higher terrain with squally cells dropping another inch or two before skies really clear. By tonight the ridge from the west will have settled in with clear and sunny conditions dominating through tomorrow.
Overnight lows were about where we were expecting with the snow with Crested Butte reporting 8 degrees while Gunnison dropped to 0. Daytime highs will climb under a mix of sun and snow showers to the high teens and low 20’s. By tonight much clearer conditions will mean much colder temperatures with all areas dropping to below 0 and potentially to the negative teens.
As the tail end of this latest round clears the area it will mean a mix of conditions. Temperatures will be warmer than yesterday but you will want to layer up to account for changes. Our next best chance for snow will come on Saturday with the next round of pacific moisture.
